Maintaining Health During Pregnancy

Whether it’s your first time being pregnant, or you are expecting again, pregnancy is an extremely personal, exciting (or scary!) journey through each trimester. Your lifestyle shifts and you might feel inspired to make healthier choices as your body transforms and goes through significant changes. Read this blog for basic tips on maintaining health during pregnancy.

And most importantly, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider and tailor any guidelines to your individual needs and circumstances.

Need for Nutrition

You might have unique cravings and are always famished, or you might have frequent morning sickness and steer clear of certain foods that may once have been a favorite. Whatever is happening, fuel your body and the growing baby through a balanced diet. Consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods that provide necessary vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, iron, calcium, and protein. Doctors may recommend taking additional supplements or prenatal vitamins but taking a “food first” approach should be your first option in supporting the development of baby and supporting your body.

In addition to what you should eat, be mindful of what you shouldn’t eat. Eliminate certain foods entirely or limit quantities and avoid harmful substances and medications.

Regular Checkups

Monitor your progress through prenatal visits. Healthcare providers are specialized in observing the progress of your pregnancy and addressing any potential issues with you or baby along the way. During these visits, doctors check the baby’s growth, the mother’s blood pressure, heart rates, important vital signs, and review any questions or concerns on a regular basis. Doctors will also be able to assure you if what you are feeling is normal and if there are any risks to be aware of.

Exercise!

Don’t shy away from being active just because you are pregnant. In fact, staying active is one of the most important activities that can help you feel comfortable – especially if your body is used to movement, so keep doing it! It can help reduce back pain, ease constipation, keep the blood flowing, and increase energy levels. Avoid any activities with a high risk of injury and instead consider low-impact exercises such as prenatal yoga, walking, and swimming.

Don’t Forget About Mental Health

Pregnancy doesn’t just change you physically, it can be an emotional rollercoaster, with hormonal shifts affecting mood and stress levels. Practice self-care and take time to reduce any added stress or discomfort. Not sure where to start? Check with your physician, local hospital, or your community – you might find prenatal classes or courses that are geared towards moms-to-be such as meditation and breathing, gentle stretching, or cooking. Feelings of anxiety can easily creep in, so be sure to lean on your partner, family, friends, or professionals to manage any worry you may have.

Rest and Relaxation

Not only will you most likely feel tired all the time, but it’ll be important to get adequate shut eye. Your body is working overtime to keep you healthy and strong, while supporting the growing baby. Fatigue, most common in the first trimester and the latter half of the third, is normal so establish a regular sleep routine. Use pregnancy pillows to support the body and alleviate added pressure or weight, avoid added caffeine or sugar, and if you are able, don’t skimp on naps.

Consider your body the vessel for the pregnancy. You’ll see a slew of different changes that are to be expected during each trimester. Through it all, maintain a healthy lifestyle. A combination of proper nutrition, regular prenatal care, safe exercise, mental health support, and rest can all add up to feeling your best. Expectant mothers can promote a healthy pregnancy and provide the best start for their baby.
